5 Strange Plants That Liven up Your Spooky Decor
October 2, 2022Five Houseplants to Warm up Your Home in the Winter
December 1, 2022The holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate with family, create memories with the ones you love, and decorate your home with all the gorgeous holiday adornments! One way to add beauty to your home this holiday season is by creating your own holiday wreath.
Whether you’re an experienced wreath-maker or want to try creating something new and beautiful, you can learn how to make the perfect holiday wreath to add to your seasonal decor with our guide below:
1. Gather Supplies
The first step in creating a beautiful holiday wreath is to collect all of the necessary supplies. You’ll need the following items:
- Wire Wreath Base
- Green Florist Wire
- Twine
- Clippers
- Ribbons of Varying Colors and Textures
- Hot Glue Gun + Glue
- Anti-Transpirant Spray (To Prevent Wilting)
- Sticks and Twigs
- Varying Types of Greenery
2. Collect Foliage
Next, you’ll want to gather the sticks and foliage you’d like to use for your wreath. You can use brush, leaves, flowers, and fauna straight from your garden to fill out your wreath. Evergreen and Pine trees offer great leafage for the base of your wreath and can be pruned throughout the year without damaging your trees.
Another great option for foliage is to use dried herbs such as sage and rosemary. Not only will they look amazing on your wreath, but they also act as a natural bug repellent to keep pests away from your beautiful new decor.
If you plan on purchasing new plants or gathering fresh pieces from shrubs in your garden, be sure you wait to cut them until you’re ready to fasten them into your wreath. Cutting them prematurely can cause them to dry out and become difficult to shape.
3. Choose Your Size and Prep the Base
Once you’ve gathered your foliage, gather your sticks or twigs and soak them in a bucket of water for about an hour. This will soften the branches and allow you to bend and construct them into a circular formation for the base of your wreath.
Once your materials are bendable and hydrated, they’re ready for shaping! Grab your wire base and begin wrapping and braiding the damp sticks and twigs around the metal frame. Continue to do this until your base is covered. Finally, secure the pieces with twine or green florist wire and allow them to dry for a couple of days before fastening plants to your wreath.
4. Trim and Fasten the Plants
Once you’ve finished creating your base, you’re ready to trim and fasten your plants! Be sure to start with your larger leaves or evergreens for the first layer of your wreath. As you’re trimming your materials, be sure to leave enough stem to weave into the wreath for a secure hold. If your pieces don’t have a long enough stem, use florist wire to fasten them to the branches.
Weave your greenery throughout the entire circle of your wreath, making sure it’s full in appearance. Once you’ve covered the entire circle, you’re ready to add the finishing touches to your new decorative piece!
5. Add the Finishing Touches
For the final step in making the perfect holiday wreath, include whatever decorative materials will bring you joy this holiday season!
Adding ribbons, beads, pine cones, burlap, and winter berries is just the beginning. The options are endless when it comes to decorating and personalizing your wreath. Whatever trinkets you choose to use, be sure you securely attach your pieces using twine, florist wire, or a hot glue gun.
Once you’ve put the final touches on your wreath, spray it with an anti-transpirant to prevent the plants from drying out and prematurely wilting.
Ta-da! There you have it! You’ve just created a beautiful holiday wreath that will bring joy and beauty to your space this holiday season. Now it’s time to hang it up somewhere you can enjoy it all winter long!
